Why Choose PHAS
Pleasant Heights After School (PHAS) was one of the first companies to provide before & after school care to children in northwest Calgary. PHAS opened its first location in 1976 to care for 30 elementary school children from the Mount Pleasant Community. Since then, PHAS has expanded to provide childcare to over 200 children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 from the following schools listed below.
With three locations in northwest Calgary (King George School, Mount Pleasant Community Centre, and Panorama Hills School), PHAS works with families to support their child’s development in a safe, caring and inclusive environment. Our enthusiastic and qualified staff provide age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities that encourage each child’s growth and socialization. At PHAS, children play, learn and have fun!

Before & After School Programs
Pleasant Heights After School offers three innovative before and after school programs for children ages 5 to 12 (Kindergarten to Grade 6). We offer daily nutritious snacks and offsite field trips to local parks and attractions around the city on school non-instruction days. Additional care is available over scheduled school breaks including winter holidays, Teachers Convention, and Spring and Easter break.

Engage, Explore, Encourage
At PHAS, we believe in learning by doing. PHAS encourages children to learn through play and interactive activities that make learning fun! Learning through play helps children become natural problem-solvers and to think strategically while encouraging creativity and curiosity. PHAS also incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) concepts into our programs to engage young minds and develop practical skills through interest and self-directed discovery.
Kindergarten Program:
Ages 5 to 6

Junior Program:
Ages 6 to 8

Leadership Program:
Ages 9 to 12
The PHAS Leadership Program is designed to provide challenging and age-appropriate activities for children ages 9 to 12. This successful program has been recognized for its innovative approach for older school-age children and has been a model for similar programs at other childcare organizations in Western Canada. Children in the program gain confidence and leadership skills by acting as mentors to younger children at PHAS and participating in a unique child-led democratic governing council. Council participants learn about personal responsibility, financial concepts, problem-solving, and teamwork. Through interest-led learning and optional outside distal supervision (parent approval required), children in this program also gain independence and self-direction.
Children in the PHAS Leadership program can attend exclusive offsite fieldtrips during the school year, including a day trip to Banff and an overnight stay at the Lions Youth Camp near Cremona in Southern Alberta. All expenses for the field trip are paid through child-led fundraising efforts organized by the PHAS Leadership program governing council. Parents may volunteer to help with field trips when needed.
